Mike Lauber, Chairman & CEO

Tusco Team Member  Since 1978

Main Responsibilities:  I don’t make the trains run on time; I make sure that we have trains on the rails.

Specialized Industry-Related Training Received:  I was the first recipient of the Certified Point-of Purchase Professional (CPP) designation bestowed by POPAI back in the 1980s and among the first wave of people designated Marketing at Retail Certified (MaRC).  I’ve attended innumerable seminars and taught segments of POP from all angles, for the POPAI master’s program, industry webinars and other educational events.

Favorite Book or Magazine:   In Search of Excellence changed my perspective on managing a business.

Favorite Pastimes or Hobbies:  Long-distance tandem bicycling with my wife; avid reader of business & political biographies; daily exercise (spinning, elliptical and/or weight training)

What Are You a Fan Of?  I don’t follow professional sports: I’m a fan of the Cleveland Browns, Cavs and Indians.

What Else Are You Passionate About?  My faith, my family, my coworkers and my alma maters

Favorite Food or Snack:  Cherry Coke Zero is my morning coffee.

Favorite Color: Tusco blue

I Can’t Imagine a Week Without:  My family

Favorite Quote:  I have many but here are two that I know by heart:  “Enthusiasm is the greatest asset in the world.  It beats money and power and influence.  It is nothing less than faith in action. (Henry Chester) and  “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience.  We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” (Pierre Teilhard be Chardin)

Social, Fraternal, Professional Participation, Awards:  National Assn. of Manufacturers Presidents Council; 2005 Citizen of the Year for Tuscarawas County;  United Way of Tuscarawas County campaign chair & board member; First Moravian Church elder, trustee and Sunday school teacher;  Chair, Community Improvement Corp of Tuscarawas  County;  College of Wooster Alumni Board; with wife, recipient of the 2011 John D McKee Alumni Award; POPAI Marketplace trade show chair (1992), Chairman of the Board (1995-6), Industry Achievement Award (1998), President’s Award (2004), and Hall of Fame (2008).

Personal Accomplishments:  Testified before Congress, addressed the Governor of Ohio and his cabinet, and have been published widely in magazines and newspapers.  As a teen, was an Eagle Scout with Gold Palm; served as the American contingent leader for the 14th World Jamboree in Lillehammer, Norway; and was a two-way, two-year starter for the Massillon Tigers football team.  Organized and led teams of cyclists in various American AIDS Rides, raising over $250,000 for HIV/AIDS charities.  Awarded the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Health Award for work in educating over one million Americans about HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.  Served on the board of the National Leadership Coalition on AIDS.  President of the College of Wooster Alumni Association (2004-6).  MBA from Amos Tuck School (Dartmouth).

Personal (married, children etc.):  Married to my college sweetheart for over 25 years; four gorgeous, talented daughters spanning a dozen years: we once had one each in grade school, middle school, high school and college.  Phew!  We adopted our two youngest from orphanages in Siberia in 2002.  Live in a restored Victorian home (1890) on the National Historic Register.

Favorite Example of Tusco’s Ingenuity:   There are actually three that come immediately to mind:  1.) Going from 60+ fasteners down to NONE and from 45+ minutes assembly time to less than ten for a merchandiser for Primo that holds over 1,500 pounds of product and is now in thousands of locations nationwide.

2.) Being challenged by Rust-Oleum to fix an engineering flaw in another company’s paint display and delivering that fix in less than 24 hours.   3.) The daily, often-mundane ways we find to solve problems large and  small to meet our clients’ needs.
